The Daubenton

Hello Peeps! A late addition to the Dragon Challenge from a few moons back by myself!

20/07/13. PSCS5 via Wacom Bamboo A6. 3 hours (with iteration time)

A few quick notes about the genesis of this piece:

My rule of thumb when it comes to mythological creatures is that it's always best to use as much reference as you possibly can in conveying a sense of believably. In particular, when it came to the design of the Daubenton, I used a knowledge of both Bat and Bird anatomy to build its body.

#SQUEAK SQUEAK#

Its skin and facial textures were based upon the Mountain Horned Dragon. Its tail was based on something a little less natural - a crane hook. The idea was that a creature designed for flight would use its tail almost like a skyhook to pierce and pick-up large animals. Again, a sense of over thinking went into the Daubenton (its name in particular is a species of day hunting bat)

Who's the little cat on his back? It's Pusheen - the internet's favourite obese tabby. At least my favourite.

A true american hero.
And, as with all my pieces so far, here's a short breakdown of the layers and build-up that went into this picture.

And as what seems to be the norm now, here is a mini break-down of the way the image was constructed.

Red-Dragon

This is my Red-Dragon, for the 3rd Arts-jam, which was a dragon / creature challenge and hopefully a Revival to my contribution to the Arts-Jam, as I've been extremely busy and unable to just sit down and do some art / sketching. This took about 5-6 hour's roughly to do, much faster than my previous submission and i'm pretty pleased with the overall piece, as an side note, the background is a heavily modified / painted picture of a landscape as I didn't want to spend to much time on it, after I had finished my dragon. :P

Wonder Woman: Battle Sprite (w/ Process!)

20/04/13. Adobe PS Vr. 4, Wacom Bamboo 09 Ed.  3 Hrs.

For this week's assignment, the Art Jam Guys were tasked with creating a piece of Pixel perfection that could pay homage to the low resolution wonders of yesteryear.

For my part of the project, I decided to create a small fighting game sprite based on a piece of original work I had created in the week - whisking me away on an adventure of tutorial hunting, iteration, and a number of scraped ideas along the way.

...and the world is waiting for you, and power you possess!

To start, the Image that I based my concept upon - which probably would of sufficed in an otherworld version of the Art Jam Guy's blog if we gone with DC Superheroes last time! With this in mind, it was worth gathering research material to begin educating myself in the world of Sprite and Pixel Art.

In particular, website 2DwillNeverDie (http://2dwillneverdie.com/) provided a good number of indepth tutorials to get me knee deep into starting my first sprite.

Rendered in Puke Green

The Original - and not very good - GameBoy inspired take on the idea. After a few more hours of reworking, revolving and reinterpolation  I finally came up with something I would be happy to sign off upon. After a little animation, and some subtle finishing, this week's Art Assignment was in the very blocky bag.

'Asuka Kazama' from 'Tekken 6'

I wanted to work in a slightly modified version of 'Streets of Rage' art style, and wanted to re-imagine a character from a current game that was based on the same principles as the original 'Streets of Rage' series; hand-to-hand combat. So I looked into 'Fighting Force' first because it was literally a 3D version of SEGA's 'Streets of Rage', but decided not to go with it because its no longer 'current': with having 'Fighting Force 3' (PS2 / XBox) canned early on in development. Eventually I settled on one of my old and new favorite fighting games, 'Tekken', and decided to use my current favorite character in it ('Asuka Kazama') as my project to re-imagine in old-school graphics.

Below is the final outcome, along with a short GIF animation which briefly shows the development steps I took to create it.

Loki Odinson

Loki - God of Lies and Mischief: is a mythological god from the Norse Mythology, who's character had been adapted into the Marvel comics primarily as a villain, tormenting and misleading the heroes into ruin. He had also been cast as the main villain and antagonist in the hit blockbuster film "The Avenger", where he unleashes an extraterrestrial army upon the world.

This design of Loki, is a mix match between his Marvel comic's costume design and that of his live action counterpart from the avengers movie, where I used plenty of references from both avenues to create this piece, splicing the colors and various pieces of armor and costume designs to create a new and unique design of this ancient god.

It took me well over 10 hours from start to finish, however, this including resetting my workspace and getting back into the flow of things, after not drawing for well over 6 months! but I hope you like the concept piece, this first arts jam piece was very fun and challenging to say the least!  I look forward to the next one and I hope you do too.

2 hours? or something like that?

And the only progression I could really show after it was made; the initial underlying sketch idea.

JamDoc: The Punisher Process

A short overview and explanation of the Inception, Conception and Execution of my piece for this week's project.

This one here!

As with most of my pieces, I decided to surround myself not only in character references, but colour and style references for this piece. I already knew that I wanted to have a pose of the character in front of a wall, where his cast shadow then formed the iconic punisher logo. However, as the project went along it made more sense to create a stronger pose then to rely on the reality of how the shadow rays would cast from the character.

A super-rough idea sketch, pitching the thought of the piece.

Once I had decided on the idea of the piece, It was a matter of dropping construction lines, rough lines, details in the face and his attire, before hopping into my favourite part of the process - the painting!

A pair of daily WIP posts during my time on the project.

Once again, in talking about my style references, the idea was to go for something quite stylised in terms of his proportions and shading, something quite different to what is usually a hyper-realistic and gritty character. In those terms, Pixar movies are a great reference!

The picture from lines to the finish line, in an animated gif!

So! I hope you guys enjoyed this little insight into my very unprofessional workflow. Let next week roll on in!
